22. Scream

22. Scream (1996). The movie that would spawn an unfortunate resurgence of the slasher film—like the killer come back for one last (predictable) scare, moments before the end of the final reel. I gave this one a watch a couple of weeks ago, and it remains one of the best examples of the slasher subgenre. Great jump scares, a memorable killer, frequent plot twists and turns, and a clever motif cement its legacy. Yes, it’s that good, and if you don’t believe me, go watch it again without the baggage of the sequels (although I really enjoyed Scream 4) and copycats weighing you down. Plus, it’s got Matthew Lillard at the full height of his (presumably cocaine- or speed-fueled) powers.
