14. Pumpkinhead

14. Pumpkinhead (1988). Special effects master Stan Winston directs what should be a generic, by-the-numbers monster movie, but which instead transcends its limitations and becomes a memorable creature feature with heart. What sells this film is the completely believable and warm relationship between Ed Harley and his son at the beginning of the film, great cinematography and lighting, and an unforgettable creature in the sadistic and unstoppable Pumpkinhead. It’s far, far better than it deserves to be.
