9. The Exorcist

9. The Exorcist (1973). This is often regarded as the scariest movie of all time, and that’s not just hype. I remember saving up for an expensive VHS copy of this when I was in 8th grade, and proceeding to show it to everyone who was intrigued by the simple question: “Want to see the scariest thing ever?” It’s a cultural touchstone in more ways than one, taking a truly subversive stance in our contemporary culture—our passive dismissal of the supernatural in favor of a purely secular, scientific worldview might just come back to bite us in the ass. This may very well be the greatest horror film ever made (it’s just not my favorite), but, as I’m fond of annoying horror fans and church-goers alike—it’s most certainly the greatest Christian film ever made.
